If you’re currently renting, you need to give notice to your landlord that you’re going to be moving out. In most cases 30 days notice is required but look at your lease for any additional requirements.
What if you have a yearly lease, but it doesn’t end for quite a few months? Then you’ve got a few options:
- We can try to push closing back to the end of your lease date.
- I can help find a subleaser for the remainder of your lease term if your lease allows.
- You can choose to keep both places for the remainder of your lease so you have plenty of time to leisurely move from your rental apartment to your new home. This does mean paying the monthly rental payment plus your mortgage payment for the remainder of your lease.
Remember that you pay rent in advance and your mortgage in arrears so if your lease is up July 31st and you settle June 30th your first mortgage payment is due August 1st (you would make July rent payment or forfeit deposit if an option), giving you the month of July to move/paint/make any improvements.
