The President Woodrow Wilson House closed to the public on September 21 and will stay closed through April 1, 2027. For six months, Kalorama's best-known museum has no tours, no public programs and no event rentals. The fall calendar is still full. Most of what it offers now comes from two places: the Alliance Française de Washington at 2142 Wyoming Ave NW, and Mitchell Park on S Street. The 18th Street edge has new places to eat and drink afterward.
The closure is for a preservation project that includes a new HVAC system. The museum's notice is clear about what stops while the work goes on:
"During this time, the museum will be unable to offer tours, public programs, or private event rentals."
The scale of the job makes sense once you know how the house has been cooled until now. The museum says the house has no central air conditioning. Window units cool the rooms, and some rooms can feel warm during a visit. Putting central systems into a historic house full of collections is slow work, so the museum is closing through the winter and plans to reopen in spring 2027.
The museum's self-guided Kalorama neighborhood walking tours start and end at the museum. The closure notice says nothing about offsite programs or a walking-tour schedule during the closure. Until the museum announces something, plan on the house's programming being fully paused.
Plenty of people think of the Alliance Française as a language school, and its classes do keep going. The fall adult session runs through Monday, November 16, and the winter session runs Wednesday, December 2, through Saturday, February 13. This fall it also has the kind of public evening programs the Wilson House used to provide, and several are in English.
| Date | Event | Time | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday, October 16 | Book talk with historian Andrew S. Curran on Biography of a Dangerous Idea, in English, for ages 21 and up | 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. | 2142 Wyoming Ave NW |
| Friday, November 6 | Screening of the documentary FABRIC, followed by a Q&A with the film team | 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. | 2142 Wyoming Ave NW |
| Saturday, November 7 | A Tour of French Dupont Circle, a two-hour guided walk with Off the Mall Tours | 12:00 p.m. | Starts at the Dupont Circle Fountain, ends at 2142 Wyoming Ave NW |
The November 7 walk does the most to fill the gap. It's in English and is part of the Alliance's "France Forever" series. It starts at 21 Dupont Circle NW and covers the French influence on the Dupont Circle area, with stops that include Larz Anderson House and the Phillips Collection. It ends on Wyoming Avenue, which means a guided walk through local history now finishes inside Kalorama while the neighborhood's own walking tours are on hold. Tickets and details are on the Alliance Française events page.
The Wilson House is dark, but Mitchell Park's October event goes ahead. Friends of Mitchell Park will hold the free 21st Annual Fall Fun Day on Sunday, October 25, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 2222 S St NW. The organizers list crafts, inflatables, face painting, a balloon artist and food vendors.
A 21-year run makes Fall Fun Day one of the longest-running public events within Kalorama itself. Updates are posted on the Friends of Mitchell Park events page.
If you're looking for a Sunday morning routine before the park event, the FRESHFARM Dupont Circle market runs Sundays year-round from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 1600 20th St NW.
Evening events on Wyoming Avenue end around dinnertime or later, and the Kalorama Triangle side of 18th Street has added options this fall.
CARLA opened September 24 at 2001 18th St NW as a walk-in bar. It lists $5 bites and $11 spritzes all day. During its Tuesday-through-Friday happy hour, beers are $6, wine is $9 and featured cocktails are $10. It takes no reservations, which works for the evening after a Friday talk.
The Berliner is bringing its German beer-hall concept back at 2436 18th St NW. Eater's September 8 fall preview gave October as the target opening month. PoPville's August report and the restaurant itself said only "this fall." No opening day had been announced as of early October, so check before you plan around it.
The Alliance Française walk and Adams Morgan Fall PorchFest are both on Saturday, November 7. The Adams Morgan Partnership promotes PorchFest as free and open to all ages, with more than 100 bands on more than 25 stages.
The two events fit together if you plan the order:
The same day is busy elsewhere too. The Adams Morgan Partnership calendar lists "Greetings from Bethlehem—A Palestinian Holiday Market" at Festival Center on November 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect more foot traffic around Kalorama's eastern edge that Saturday than on a typical fall weekend.
Anyone walking into Kalorama from Woodley Park on Connecticut Avenue crosses the Taft Bridge, where railing work is still underway. DDOT's project page lists the pedestrian railing improvements as under construction. Work began in summer 2026, and completion is "anticipated" for fall 2026. That date is a target, not a confirmed finish.
The latest DDOT traffic notice in our research is dated September 4. It listed daily southbound lane closures from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a southbound sidewalk closure expected to last through September, with pedestrians sent to the northbound sidewalk. A separate National Park Service notice, reported by PoPville in 2025, closed the grass area southwest of Connecticut Avenue and Calvert Street and its paved path for the bridge work through October 30, 2026. Before walking over for the October 16 talk or the Mitchell Park afternoon, check the DDOT Taft Bridge project page for current closures.
Some things don't have a replacement this fall. We found no embassy events open to the public inside Sheridan-Kalorama for this season. The French Embassy's La Maison Française events are at 4101 Reservoir Road NW, outside the neighborhood. Its event listings, such as the one for "Timur: Songs of Love & Satire," require a reserved ticket and government ID for entry. We also found no fall events scheduled at Kalorama Park. Wyoming Avenue and S Street are where the programming is for now, and the Wilson House plans to resume tours and programs when it reopens after April 1, 2027.
If you're planning a spring sale on these blocks, the Wilson House reopening and a finished Taft Bridge will both shape how buyers first see the neighborhood. Stephanie Bredahl can build your listing timeline around them. Request a stress-free selling plan, and we'll go over dates that fit your home and the neighborhood's spring calendar.
